Weekly and monthly events to raise awareness, generate campus involvement

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly’s Campus Dining has a full slate of special events in store for the 2016-17 academic year. The events are designed to raise awareness and promote involvement by the campus community in Campus Dining initiatives.

This series of events kicked off at Food Day on Thursday, October 20. On that day, Campus Dining featured a variety of local, sustainable dishes at 19 Metro. In addition, Chef Michael Albright offered free tastings in the UU, just prior to the UU’s Farmers’ Market. Campus Dining also hosted tables at the market to showcase just a few of their community vendors such as Edna’s Bakery, Harvest Santa Barbara and Family Tree Produce.

Ongoing events will include:

Meatless Mondays
Beginning October 24, Campus Dining launched “Meatless Mondays” at 19 Metro, offering one or more meat-free main dishes at the all-you-care-to-eat venue. Every Monday this year will feature meat-free dishes, labeled and endorsed by Campus Dining’s registered dietitian. Meatless Mondays is a nationwide campaign, aiming to educate on the benefits of going meatless once a week – including health, environmental and economic benefits.

BBQ Wednesdays
Every Wednesday, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Campus Dining offers a Santa Maria-style barbecue in front of Campus Market. Items include tri tip sandwiches, tri tip plates and seasonal veggies. This event is ongoing and weather permitting.

Go Green Thursdays
Every Thursday, customers wearing green Cal Poly apparel can save 10 percent on prepared food items at The Avenue, Campus Market, Mustang Station and Sandwich Factory.

Taste of Campus Dining
Also every Thursday, Campus Dining’s executive chef Michael Albright will host a “Tasting Thursdays” booth at the UU between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m. Chef Albright will be offering students, faculty and staff an opportunity to try new dishes that Campus Dining’s culinary team has under development. This will provide a way to sample and provide feedback on potential menu items.

Taste-Learn-Win
On one Wednesday of every month, Campus Dining will host a Taste-Learn-Win event. There will be opportunities to taste, learn and win as Campus Dining showcases vegetarian and vegan protein sources and offers tastings, recipes and tips to attendees. In addition, a box of Cal Poly produce will be raffled off.
