Executive Director’s Message

Budget Update

The Budget Conference Committee acted this past Friday to confirm Gov. Jerry Brown’s proposed cuts to higher education, which include a $500 million reduction to the CSU’s 2011-2012 budget.

As we await the final decision from the CSU, Cal Poly will use an enrollment target of 3,750 new first-time freshman headcount for Fall 2011, an increase of 224 students above Fall 2010. While the first-time freshman headcount is good news for Corporation commercial operations, it remains important to understand that a budget cut to the university may impact the overall stability of the Corporation. As a result of the proposed state budget cuts, the Corporation will not include funding for merit compensation when it submits its budget for FY2011-12.

Corporation employees funded by a contract or grant should consult their Project Director. Although the economy may appear to be stabilizing, the state fiscal crisis is far from over. As difficult as it may be at times, the Corporation is a partner on the Cal Poly campus and will follow the lead of the President.

NASA Signs On with Cal Poly’s Picosatellite Deployer

In the 10 years since Cal Poly developed the Poly Picosatellite Orbital Deployer (P-POD), there have been six launches in the U.S. and Russia of 32 small “CubeSat” satellites using the deployer, and close to 100 Cal Poly students have taken part in the satellite-launching program.

But that’s only the beginning. NASA has just announced a five-year contract award to Cal Poly to provide a broad range of P-POD services for NASA’s own CubeSat program. The contract’s maximum cumulative potential value is $5 million.

The contract will ensure out-of-this-world, hands-on opportunities for Cal Poly students, who will be involved in actual launch campaigns working with launch providers, the NASA launch team and all universities developing CubeSats.

The NASA Launch Services Program is proposing to purchase a Poly Picosatellite Orbital Deployer (P-POD) carrier and integration services from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo for three CubeSats. For more informaiton on the launch visit http://glory.gsfc.nasa.gov/

IT Updates

Security Certificates – Warning:

Kronos Web-based Time and Attendance System:

IT is working closely with Human Resources and Payroll in implementing Kronos Workforce Central system, a web-based Time and Attendance system. Workforce Central provides automated tracking and management of employee work hours. Its pay rules engine stores and automatically calculates hours-worked information for consistency in applying rules and policies throughout the organization. Workforce Central integrates time and attendance data to streamline the reconciliation between time reporting and check creation, and greatly reduces the manual efforts needed in processing payroll. The implementation will be done in stages, with a pilot group to go live during the second quarter in 2011. The second group is expected to go live during the summer of 2011, and full implementation is targeted for the summer of 2012.

Email Retention Policy:

The university plans to automatically remove the messages older than six months from email default folders, including “Inbox” and “Sent” in the future. While no implementation date has been announced, users are strongly recommended to relocate the messages they wish to keep to more permanent folders.

Campus Information

In order to complete the entire Recreation Center facility on schedule, the Rec Center and pool will close this summer and will re-open when the expansion project is complete.

When the new Recreation Center facility opens in January 2012 a new on-line payment system will be implemented and payroll deductions will be discontinued and group exercise classes will become free to Rec Center members.
