Via Carta Campaign

Cal Poly Corporation commissioned the university’s first outdoor mural to serve as a focal point along the busy Via Carta pedestrian corridor, to help beautify and grow the collection of campus public art. The mural is a triptych format that addresses three main themes – migrant workers/farm laborers, the agricultural bounty of the California Central Coast, and Cal Poly’s student contributions to the field of agriculture – that exemplify the university’s Learn-by-Doing ethos.

A public relations program was devised to support the project, from an open call for submissions to artist selection to the mural’s debut. The program included media relations, communications, social media, web and community outreach, involving stakeholders from across the university. The goal of the public relations program was to debut a mural that would make all of Cal Poly proud. To that end, the program was a resounding success.
